Believe it or not… I watch a lot of tv. Yeah, Shocking I know.

I usually download most of the shows, failing to catch them when they actually air, but the downloaded ones are usually better quality (in HD) anyways. Some of my favorite tv shows are The Office, How I Met Your Mother, and Scrubs.

Skipping to the end… I wrote this last but figured I’d try to keep the first part general, and the rest of it related to me. Moral of the story is that TV is so enticing to many of us because it can relate so well to us, or at least give us a different way of viewing the things that happen to us, they make us laugh about the situations and take ourselves a little less seriously, which is probably the most important result of watching them.

Concerning The Office, I think all guys would like to associate themselves with the character Jim Halpert. I do, and I’ll go one step further and say my real life Dwight is Rob ‘Billy’ Story (one of my fellow OEs/grad students). Not entirely sure why but he just reminds me of Dwight a lot. Jim relates to me in that he’s stuck in this shitty job, but stays there cause he’s scared to do anything else. Sure, sure Pam also has something to do with that… but when he moved away, he stayed within the company… same shitty job, without Pam. Now, this isn’t to say I’m stuck in a shitty job… because I’m not. I did used to feel that way though. A few years back when I had no idea what I wanted to do, and at the time I was encountering that… no one does. It was the beginning of college. I had little job experience in my field… I actually had two fields cause I didn’t know what direction I wanted to go in and I was stuck and hated it. Now that’s over and I’m good to go.

Next up… How I Met Your Mother. In this show I relate to the character Ted (for this show most guys would probably want to be Marshall). Like Ted, I am a hopeless romantic.

Afterall, my motto is ‘go big or go home’…

Funny story from last year: I actually asked a girl that I went to coffee with a couple times to go to New York City with me to watch the ball drop on New Year’s Eve. It was a spur of the moment type question, I honestly didn’t think it would work, but I figured ‘why the hell not’. Sure it’s a 1 in a million shot… but people win the lottery. Ted does a lot of those big romantic gestures in the show, with humorous consequences… and that’s ok, because we know he gets the girl (even though we don’t know who that girl is yet). Me and my friends sometimes attempt to play the pick-up game… “Haaaave ya met Ted Matt?” It works pretty well, don’t use it often enough though.

Which leads me to Scrubs. My favorite show… though that could be because it has been around for longer (6 seasons under it’s belt vs 2 for HIMYM and 3 for The Office). It’s hard to say which character I relate to on that show. I have a lot of the same things happen to me that happens to JD (though not nearly enough none of the beautiful women though), but I’m stubborn as hell, like Dr. Cox.
