arlington…

21 Oct

This weekend I had my interview with the NAIP (the job I want) and when I wasn’t rocking my interview I was hanging out with some people up here. Thursday night (my arrival night) Brian, Andy and I went out to the Crystal City Sports Bar. I’m about 90% sure that I had been there before (oddly enough, 1 year ago almost exactly). Last october Spencer, Clint and I went to an Advanced Naval Propulsion Symposium up here, and after it one night I think we went to that same bar (though I didn’t know that it was 3 floors, the place is huge!). We watched some football and had some food there. Missed the happy hour with Annie Sattler though.

Friday was the interview, so I took the metro and wound up being 1.5 hrs early (the metro is… efficient), though I did know in advance I’d be that early. After the interview, Brian, Andy, Amy (also up for an interview), Kara and myself met up at Jenny’s (my wife) for dinner, and then we went downtown (minus Jenny). Downtown we met up with Amanda, Annie Sattler, Larry and Brian (AE). We started off finding a bar called Ri Ra’s that was pretty nice ($5 cover) and it had a pretty good live band. But shortly after arriving a few of us left and we went to a bar called the Clarendon Ballroom ($10 cover, ouch). It had very expensive drinks, was a lot larger and also had a pretty good live band. It was more of a club then the bar that Ri Ra was… a lot of dancing going on.

Saturday Brian, Andy, Andy’s brother Dan, Amy, Kara and I went to a place in Ballston called Bailey’s Sports Pub. It has lots of TVs (all playing football) and the food was good too. Then we went and bought furniture for Andy and Brian’s apartment from the Ikea in College Park, assembled it, and watched football the rest of the night.

It’s great how the metro brings everything in the area into easy reach. I’d like to think of this weekend as a taste of what life will be like up here, and if it’s anything like this it’ll be great. I know a good amount of people up here, and even though I’ve never lived in one I think I’m a city boy at heart. So much to do around here.

Well i get to go home to blacksburg tomorrow, where I have to catch up on some work. I should hear back about the job within 30 days (though I’ve heard it’ll be sooner).

blog action day

15 Oct

Today is blog action day, and I’m participating.

The best way to participate is to post on your blog something that relates to the environment. Your post can be about anything to do with the environment. So you could write a post which is offtopic for your blog OR relate the environment back to your topic in some way.

So I’m going to talk about the wind energy. It’s free and relatively cheap energy, yet some people are opposed to it because they don’t think it is asthetically pleasing. Personally I think wind turbines look awesome (aside from the free energy aspect) and that if the retards that don’t think they do, and actually OBJECT to having them, they should goto Iraq and fight for their oil. Get the giant stick out of your butt and embrace free energy.

about where…

09 Oct

This post is being written from the comfort of my bed. I’m about to goto sleep, but I have the sudden urge to write some stuff down. This may or may not (like many posts that never see the light of day) get ‘Published’ to the front page. Where do I see myself in X years? The age-old question… you can see it on job interviews too (though I never have). I’m going to just go over the basics, cause it’s all a guessing game anyways. I guess you can think of the following as where I’d like to be. In the corresponding years I’ll track down this post and see how I compare. I view the basics as:

  • Work
  • Relationship status
  • Living Situation
  • Car

Where do I see myself in 1 year?
Right now I think the job I want the most is with the Naval Acquisition Internship Program (NAIP). So 1 year from now I’ll be fairly settled in the DC area and hopefully enjoying both my job, the people I work with, and spending some QT (quality time) with some friends that have moved up there. I will be researching what sweet ride I’m going to buy next year.
So:

  • Work: Employed in NAIC, happy
  • Relationship status: looking
  • Living Situation: renting
  • Car: Researching which one to buy

Where do I see myself in 5 years?
In 5 years, after having gone through the NAIP, I will have advanced pretty rapidly and will be managing something big (and cool). I’ll be in a serious relationship, probably contemplating marriage.
So:

  • Work: Finished with NAIC, probably doing R&D somewhere like Carderock
  • Relationship status: serious relationship
  • Living Situation: I’d have enough money to own, but probably renting
  • Car: 3.5 years old now, still in awesome condition

Where do I see myself in 10 years?
Am I still alive? (joking) Happy with my job, in a pretty high up position… I bark and people jump, but I’m still a cool boss. Married with 1.5 kids. I own a house.
So:

  • Work: Pretty high up
  • Relationship status: Married (w/1.5 kids)
  • Living Situation: Own a house
  • Car: Probably just bought a minivan, maybe have replaced my car from 9 years ago too

Funny thing about these lists is there’s no way to make the relationship one just happen. Work, living situation, and car are all really easy. Finding the right girl is not. Being a hopeless romantic is hopeless sometimes…
