Coffee

24 Apr

So it took me a little more than 23 years… but I just realized that coffee boosts my productivity by about 1000%. And I’m not talking about a cup an hour… I had one cup of coffee today around lunch time and worked the remainder of the day… no questions asked. Awesome. Over the next month I’m going to need that. My time here at tech is winding down. Everyone I know that is still here has countdowns going on… XX many days til graduation!!!! All it does for me is add on the stress… each day closer we are to graduation… is a day closer I need to be ready to defend. I’ve got a great start on the first 3 chapters of my thesis… but I don’t have any data… so the remaining 3 chapters can’t really be worked on. And right now the optimization results (which should be done by tomorrow) look a bit funny.

Found out this week that Carrie will be working with me in the submarine group. That’ll be neat. Hmm… what else… My wife Jenny came down to Tech this weekend to deliver an awesome painting last year’s sub design team got her to make for Dr Brown as a thank you.
DB\'s painting

Belle (my mistress) also came into town. As did Ron Forbes. (They did not bring paintings) There were a LOT of people in town this weekend. Understandable since it was the weekend after 4-16, but there was also the spring game.

Bedtime… nite

Live for 32…

Looking back to my post last year about the tragedy:  http://this.iswhatithink.com/2007/04/16/tragedy-at-virginia-tech/

I hadn’t realized I had written so little at the time.  The day I went off mostly as I said in the post, but I left out some parts.  Seeing the all the police swarming the building from Randolph, the phone calls with my parents as things were progressing.  My parents were on vacation in Florida at the time.  I called them about the first two deaths on campus and the subsequent shooting in Norris, but at the time we didn’t know how many people were injured or killed.  I told my Dad two people were killed and some were injured.  An hour or so later I called him back and told him that at least 20 people had died.  His reaction:  “You’re kidding right?”  It was my reaction too.  32 people was utterly shocking… it still is.

Today was an interesting day because of looking back and seeing how a year later it still effects people.  I didn’t participate in any of the day activities.  Last night I went to the candle lighting, and tonight I went to the vigil.  I took pictures at both (they’re on my flickr).  I think I’m past it.  I don’t really get choked up on much.  I don’t like to dwell on the past… I like to look towards the future.  It was an insane tragedy but it did bring everyone together.  And I do mean everyone.  On April 16th, everyone is a Hokie.

Andrew Mager also wrote a blog post related to this on his blog:  http://www.andrewmager.com/2008/04/16/remebering-our-lost-hokie-souls/
